Pain IS the healing, Pain is not the enemy
Mark Whitwell | Heart of Yoga
Pain IS the healing. It is a natural function of Mother Nature that is literal biochemical changes, energy, and correction in the system. Pain demands its own reduction. It demands change in lifestyle, diet, relationships of every kind. Whether pain reduction medicines and surgical intervention are used, or not, the basic premise that pain is a healing natural function of nature, so it is good to recognize it. Pain protects us by demanding change. Just like we would not know to take our hand out of the fire without pain arising. Pain is a nurturing force to cooperate with.
In Yoga, it is understood that everything is “sat”, everything is the truth including restriction and the mass patterning of limit. Including pain. It is really happening and needs not to be denied. Pain is not the enemy. Everything is a reflection and visibility of the absolute condition of cosmic reality.
If you are involved in modern-day popular Yoga your teacher is Tiramalai Krishnamacharya. He was the teacher of all the teachers who popularized Yoga. Krishnamacharya used to say, “Thank God for my pain, because it has enabled me to practice.” He called it the “unavoidable motive to practice” that moves you to take the practical steps to enjoy your life.
By the gentleness of its daily discipline, your Yoga teaches you to participate in the natural intimacies that you have already been given. The resulting health alleviates your pain. The essential ingredient is not simply the breath but also your own intimate relationship with your breath and with life. This allows the healing power intrinsic to life to function most efficiently.
We all breathe, certainly, and essentially, but we usually forget all about our breathing. The daily practice of breathing and moving will develop an intimacy with your breath and with your self. This intimate connection is the great healing. You are participating with your breath, consciously and compassionately, in the fullness of life itself. The result is regeneration and health: the goal of Mother Nature.
Leave. the body alone. Give it a chance for its inherent intelligence to function. Life can explode from within you or it gradually unfolds. It is what happens with life on Earth. This is what we are built for. When we stop looking, the natural state, which is love, the intrinsic union with all, seeps through and sometimes suddenly bursts forth. You will taste life like you have never tasted it before.
In a life of Yoga, we let the wonder and utter connection to life be sufficient. We let the breath be sufficient. We let this sitting here be sufficient. We let the Reality be sufficient. We enjoy the intrinsic, inborn powers of life moving in us. Life itself moves us into every kind of wonderful relatedness, including deep, abiding sexual intimacy freely chosen in a way that is right for us as individuals. Sex is the substance and nurturing force of all form.
